The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) helps limited-resource families and youth improve their eating behaviors and contributes to other personal development skills through behaviorally focused nutrition education.
NJ EFNEP is a national program that uses practical, evidence-based lesson series to help low-income families and youth eat better and get more active on a budget. Through a series of nutrition classes, EFNEP helps families and youth acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to help them make the behavior changes that are necessary for their families to have nutritionally sound diets. EFNEP is also intended to increase food security to improve the dietary and nutritional welfare of participants and their families. Peer educators (paraprofessionals), who are indigenous to the communities they serve and who can relate to class participants’ experiences, provide the education. In NJ, EFNEP operates in Camden, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic Counties. Virtual classes are also available in counties outside of these four.
